Parapsychological Studies

Contrary to what so many believe, the field of Parapsychology studies much more than ghosts and hauntings.Parapsychologists are generally not very psychic (and psychics are rarely parapsychologists).Parapsychology is not psychology. So, what is the field all about? Just who are the parapsychologists and what do they do?

This 60 hour course is an overview to the field of Parapsychology, and the main areas of research and investigation: ESP, PsychoKinesis (mind over matter), and Survival of Bodily Death. Included will be a general discussion of where the field came from, where the major centers of research are today, and where the field might be headed. Students will have an opportunity to review some of the basic research in the field and to apply the theories and applications to their current helping profession or to pursue parapsychological field investigations on their own. All courses may be taken Individually.

CE units are available for MFTs, LCSWs or RNs.

Certificate in Parapsychological Studies, materials and texts are included in the tuition price of $1,255.00

The Certificate in Parapsychological Studies is a 60 hour course of study comprised of six separate courses (not including the 3 hour Introductory class.) The course syllabus follows.

Introduction to Parapsychology: 3 hours, $30

(While this is a pre-requistite class for the certificate it may be waived depending upon life experience with parapsychology).
This lecture is meant as an introduction and overview to the field of Parapsychology, and the main areas of research and investigation: ESP, PsychoKinesis (mind over matter), and Survival of Bodily Death. Included will be a general discussion of where the field came from, where the major centers of research are today, and where the field might be headed.

Ghost Hunting: Investigating the Paranormal: 12 hours, $250

Most people are interested in the paranormal phenomena we classify as ghostly: Apparitions, Hauntings and Poltergeists. Many are interested in understanding their own experiences and the experiences of others. Many are intensely interested in gaining the skills and knowledge necessary to be an effective investigator of such things: a Ghost Hunter.

This class is a guide to ghost hunting, and attendees will gain the basic skills and understanding for investigation of ghosts, poltergeists, haunted places and related psychic experiences. The class will include the models of what these things are (from the field of parapsychology), how the scientific and psychic approaches can mesh together, and how to assess a situation, investigate it, and resolve the case to the satisfaction of the people having the experiences (and hopefully to the satisfaction of the ghosts, when they're involved). You will learn about: Apparitions, hauntings and poltergeists: differences and similarities.
What else can make a "ghost" the investigative process, from initial call to resolution; Psychics in ghost hunting; How the techniques of the professionals differ from those of the amateurs;
Naturally, the class will include some of Auerbach's more exciting cases.

PK and Precognition: 15 hours, $275

MIND, MATTER AND TIME: How Our Psychic Abilities Affect the World Around Us, Pierce the Veil of Time and Help Create the Future. In this six week course, Loyd Auerbach will discuss two fascinating psychic abilities, Psychokinesis (mind over matter) and Precognition. In addition, he'll delve into theories of Time and Space that connect Psychokinesis (PK) and Precognition.

In relation to PK, he'll delve into: what parapsychologists and many others know today about PK, how it manifests itself, and how it hints at the broader interconnectedness between our consciousnesses and the Universe around us.

There will be an experiential PK segment to this class, working with a method for PK developed by the late (great) science and science fiction writer Martin Caidin,, himself capable of PK.

As for Precognition, Auerbach will cover questions such as: Can anyone really predict the Future? How? Is there really a Future that can be predicted? What is Time? Can we change the Future? Why do so many psychics miss on their predictions? What about the premonitions of the average person?

Parapsychologists have evidence that precognition exists. Research indicates that people can predict some future events, but not all. Sometimes precognition works well, and sometimes not.

Loyd Auerbach will discuss a variety of theories of Time and Timelines especially in the context of our apparent ability to predict the Future. He'll cover the varied ways precognitive information pops up in our lives and some of the interesting research in Parapsychology. He'll discuss conclusions reached by researchers about the nature of our ability to foretell the future.

Finally, there will be a focus on a conundrum in parapsychology: Do we predict the future or cause it to come into being with a little help from our PK? If the former, how do we use this information to shape our own personal Futures? If the latter, what does that say about our beliefs and expectations, and how all humanity consciously and unconsciously shapes the Future? Join us for what will be a mind bending experience.

Being Psychic: 12 hours, $250

With an overview of how psychic abilities show up in people's experiences the world over, this class/seminar focuses on the informational psychic abilities that have been called Extra-Sensory Perception:telepathy, clairvoyance and precognition. We'll discuss how these abilities show up in people's experiences, both those of the average person and the ostensibly more talented psychics. With discussion of parapsychological research from the early days to the more recent remote viewing, ganzfeld, and staring studies, attendees will also learn the evolution of research methods in the laboratory, and what parapsychological researchers have discovered with regard to personality, physiological and belief variables. We'll discuss how these abilities are experienced and accepted or rejected in various cultures around the world, and the major part Belief plays in having and developing ESP. We'll also discuss the major debate in Parapsychology dealing with Survival (of Bodily Death) vs. Super-Psi as conceptual explanations for a variety of ghostly and after-death experiences.

Psychic development will be addressed and some techniques passed along. Basic philosophy behind "being psychic" will be discussed, as well as a primary focus on immense part that Belief plays. We'll also discuss the role telepathy and clairvoyance play in ghost encounters, hauntings and mediumship.

We'll take some time to try a few more experiential situations.

We'll conduct some clairvoyance and remote viewing "tests" as well as play a few telepathy and psychometry games based somewhat on the instructor's experience of a TV game show that was in development for the Game Show Network in 2002 (that show currently in limbo, it seems).

Finally, here will be discussion of how to assess psychic readings and even the backgrounds of self-professed psychics, parapsychologists, and paranormal investigators.

The Search for Life After Death: 9 hours, $200

Do we survive the death of our bodies? Is there Life after Death? What is the evidence?

This seminar will cover the search for evidence of Survival of Bodily Death from the earliest psychical researchers to parapsychologists of today. With an eye towards the evidence garnered and the research and investigations methods to gather it the class covers topics such as ghosts, mediumship, near death experiences, electronic voice phenomena, out of body experiences, reincarnation and psychic experience says about whether we live on in some fashion after the deaths of our bodies.

Some time will also be spent discussing the recent research of Gary Schwartz, working with psychic mediums at the University of Arizona and the work of the Division of Personality Studies at the University of Virginia in Reincarnation and Apparition research.

The importance of ESP and PK in any model of Survival will be discussed.

The class will also look at the debate regarding evidence for Survival vs. the Super-Psi hypothesis from the perspective of the Survival proponents.

Theories and Models of Psychic Experience: 6 hours, $150

This short course covers basic models of how psychic abilities seem to work, what apparitions and hauntings are, and a survey of theories that might (or might not) explain it all. In part one, research findings that connect to how psi might work are reviewed and discussed. In part two, theoretical perspectives on psi are reviewed and discussed, including electromagnetic, space-time, quantum entanglement, and others. Also discussed will be explanations of psi experiences and abilities of a more normal kind, such as perceptual errors, fraud, and neurological constructs.

Psychic Culture Clash: (formerly Parapsychology: The Crossover Science) 6 hours, $150

How do psychic abilities manifest differently in different cultures?

How are Magic, Witchcraft, and Sorcery beliefs tied in to psychic experiences and abilities?

Does Religion play a role?

How do psychic experiences fit in (or not fit in) to mainstream models of the Mind and Behavior?

Is Quantum Physics really relevant to understanding psychic experiences or Consciousness?

Why does Western Mainstream Science react with such negativity to even the idea that psychic abilities might exist?

This short course addresses the questions above and covers the place of Parapsychology in the spectrum of all fields of Science with a particular focus on cross-cultural concepts and magic, witchcraft and sorcery beliefs. We'll look at why the academic culture of Western Mainstream Science has such issues with parapsychology and psychic phenomena, especially in light of how parapsychologists have contributed to other fields, and how the concepts, theories and research of other fields have impacted how parapsychologists have worked since the beginnings of the field in the 19th Century.

All seven courses must be taken to fulfill the requirements for the Certificate in Parapsychological Studies. Please contact us for more information.

Courses can be taken and paid for individually.

OBEs & NDEs: In-Depth. To Be Scheduled, Attend in person or by phone. Cost: $50.

An in-depth look at Out of the Body Experiences (sometimes called Astral Projection) and Near Death Experiences, from both the experiential and research perspectives. We'll discuss some of the techniques people have taught to have an OBE, how this may connect to Survival of Bodily Death, and where there's a crossover with ESP. We'll also look at the issue of apparitions of the living and bilocation.
With NDEs we'll discuss the range of experiences, common and uncommon factors, how the NDE sometimes brings psi forward, and the implications of the NDE with regard to Survival. Naturally we'll consider the place of the OBE in the NDE process, and how that's often yielded some of the best verifiable information.
Finally, we'll consider non-psi explanations for various NDEs and OBEs, mainly from neuroscience and psychology and where such explanations still fall short.

Test Your ESP & PK. March 8, 6:30 to 9:30. Attend in person or by phone. Cost: $50

This special session will present a variety of methods for people to test their own ESP and PsychoKinesis (Mind Over Matter) -- which we'll try throughout the class. The emphasis will be mainly on various ESP abilities (including mediumistic talents) and attendees will get to try their minds at a variety of tasks.

Parapsychologist Loyd Auerbach will "test" you and provide assessments, as well as provide you with instruction as to how to continue to work with the testing methods at home -- which can help you develop your abilities as well.

For this session, please contact the instructor, Loyd Auerbach, directly to pre-register either at profparanormal@gmail.com or 925-518-4071. It is very important that you contact him before the session by Noon on Monday, March 7th. We have both a minimum and maximum number of people we can have for this session -- if we do not have enough reservations by the day before, the session will be cancelled (though it looks to be popular, in which case pre-register by Monday or you may not have a spot).

Poltergeists: In-Depth. March 15, 6:30 to 9:30. Attend in person or by phone. Cost: $50

The term "poltergeist" translates to "noisy ghost", which is how 16th Century Germans saw the particular physical phenomena when they coined the term. Beginning in the early 20th Century and by the 1950s--based on hundreds of case investigations and research studies--parapsychologists formed a new model: living agent psychokinesis (PK). Learn why this model holds up so well, how it helps us resolve the situations and how it connects to lab research on PK.

Also considered is PK caused by apparent apparitions/entities, how the activity and experiences differ, and why apparitional PK activity is no longer called "poltergeist activity" here in the US. Finally, we look at the how the living-agent distinction is not necessarily made in other parts of the world, such as the UK, and what recent analyses of activity in cases has revealed.

With some focus on the work of the late William G. Roll, who formalized the model used for living agent PK.

Mediumship. March 22, 29, 6:30 to 9:30. Attend in person or by phone. Cost: $100

A two-part class looking deeply into the history, practice, beliefs, claims and evidence of Mediumship, both physical and mental, and the research and findings since the mid-1800s. Includes discussion of opening up as a medium and learning to control one's mediumistic abilities.

Apparitions: In-Depth. May 10, 6:30 to 9:30. Attend in person or by phone. Cost: $50.

This one session class focuses on all forms of apparitions- a.k.a. ghost. We'll look at apparitions seemingly projected by the living, crisis apparitions, apparitions seen by people on their deathbed, and of course, apparitions of the dead. We'll examine some "best cases" and look at explanations and theories of apparitions of the dead. Illustrated with lots of ghost stories from the work of Loyd Auerbach (and of course, from other parapsychologists). We'll discuss the importance of discerning whether a "ghost" in a case is a conscious entity or a residual/psychic imprint. Finally, we'll cover how to potentially communicate with and best deal with apparitions in investigations.

Hauntings: In-Depth. May 24, 6:30 to 9:30. Attend in person or by phone. Cost: $50

This one-evening session will look at the long history of haunted places and objects and why psychical researchers and parapsychologists have separated them into their own category different from apparitions. Learn about the models of hauntings, from psychic imprinting to the British "stone tape theory" to geophysical possibilities.

We'll also delve into specific haunting cases, including a few from the casebooks of the instructor, Loyd Auerbach and several of his colleagues. We'll consider how sometimes phenomena can be mixed (hauntings and apparitions together), and even how a haunting can cause a poltergeist situation. Finally, for those investigating haunting, apparition, and poltergeist cases, we'll talk about resolving cases of hauntings and how and why haunting resolutions are so different from the others.

Psychic Attack, Possession & Psychic Protection. May 31, 6:30 to 9:30. Attend in person or by phone. Cost: $50

This one-shot class takes a look at the evidence for and against possession (by spirits and demons), how this is related to channeling and mediumship, to spirit attachment, and the difference between possession and psychic attack. How can one discern what's going on in situations that might be called possession, psychic attack, ESP gone wrong, psychological disturbance or just plain mistaken perception?  What can an investigator do?  Or an exorcist? Or even a shaman?

There is discussion of the pluses and minuses of spirit communications practices, from the "dreaded" Ouija Board (and why it has a bad rap) to automatic writing to EVP and the use of K2 and other meters and flashlights. Finally, parapsychologist Loyd Auerbach directly addresses techniques for psychic protection and self-defense as well as getting rid of bad energy/entities.

The Certificate program may be taken via a distance learning option. All courses have been audio-taped, live. This includes lectures, discussion and questions/answers between students and the instructor.

To participate in the distance learning option, distance learning students can pay full tuition and fees ($1,255.00). In this case students receive all course CDs, handouts, and additional materials and are invited to participate by conference call in the classes as they are held at HCH. This is not a requirement for certification however.

In addition, distance learning students will be scheduled for a one to two hour tele-class (via telephone) with the instructor (longer classes get two hours, shorter classes get 1 hour tele-class). In this way, students will still be able to interact and ask questions of the instructor without having to be in the classroom. Naturally, students may interact via email as well.

For each certificate-related course, there will be a short multiple choice test to ensure the material has been understood by the students.

Distance-learning students completing the program will be entitled to the same Certificate received by local students attending in-person.
